We just moved here... with 2 girls 13 and 11, and a boy that is 9. What are some fun older kid activities around here? That are cheap :o)? We wander around clueless...LOL!
There is fun Depot off Sweeten Creek Rd,,.... Indoor Soccer Center, I think there is still a skating rink in East Asheville... Bowling ( 2) one on Tunnel and Patton of course these can get a little pricey but if you take advantage of certain times fo day they are not too bad or deals they are not bad... I wish there were teen hang outs but not any that I am aware of. I guess that is why the driving teens hang all over Patton avenue every weekend.. :-)
Welcome to Asheville,
We have found athletics a positive activity. Softball and baseball rec leagues are great activities in this area. I'm sure the same is true of soccer. There are indoor year round athletic training facilities that allow softball or baseball players to practice among other children. The one that comes to mind is on Sweeten Creek Road called the Diamond Mine. They have winter "hitting leagues" for all ages and of course lessons. There is a charge.
Another option is a new Explorers Post that is just being re-established for ages 13-14 for BOTH girls and boys. This is a Boy Scouts of America's Learning for Life Program that presently meets at the Asheville Police Department once a month. Their established goals are lofty and admirable...& the adults involved in the Post are dedicated, caring professionals, including a dynamic school resource officer and several Asheville Police Officers with experience working with young people. A contact number for that is (828) 259-5933 to get more detailed information. This is a free program!
I find that reading the Asheville Citizen Times carefully will lead to various opportunities for older children/teenagers. For example, from time to time I read of a church that is offering a special program for older children. And many churches in town do have active youth groups so that might be of interest and these would also be free.
Lastly, I haven't seen it for awhile, but I noticed a notice in the newspaper this past summer about a hiking group for tweens/teenagers. I don't have a contact for that, but perhaps someone else on here does.
Great question, thanks for posting. We could all use more ideas!
