WNC Mom

Hi, me again....still not in Asheville and actually....feeling a bit low. See my sister is begging me to move there, though she lives in Charlotte at the moment. So I have been doing my own research. I have been watching the news & checking out City data.com forums too. So many people at City-data have been ranting about how "over-rated" Asheville is and how much crime has been happening due to the joblessness & public housing problems & locations. Do you think this is true? I am really bummed because I read that a homeless man was killed in the Montford neighborhood - very near the Issac Dickson school - a place I hoped to call home. Now I am rethinking everything! Hubby is suggesting we think about the Research Triangle instead....not to sure....need to hear mother's take on the crime in Asheville. I was thinking I would live close to downtown & bus it to the French Broad Market. We would also be moving with my mother - now in TN that is also doing "what ever it takes!" to get me to move to NC so she can be our part-time nanny (woo-hoo!). Asheville seems like such a lovely place! All the pictures from Google Earth - seem to remove any ghetto thought I have. Just wondering if any of you would consider living a mile or 2 away from downtown...maybe I am dreaming too close. I was also thinking of the Grove Park hood, near Wearver Park....maybe yall know of another walk-able area that is safe?

I live in Montford and take long walks nearly every day throughout the neighborhood. I have never felt unsafe to walk through the neighborhood and into downtown during the day. I was surprised to hear about the shootings when they happened (I think it was last October) but I also know that no small town is immune to crime, and Asheville is a wonderful place to live. People are friendly, the arts are abundant and varied, the scenery is beautiful, and people are fired up about so many different important issues that I am learning something new everyday.

Hope this helps.

I lived in Raleigh(RTP) for most of my life before moving to Greensboro for school. There are 10 X more jobs there, but after graduating my fiance and I had to decide between moving to Raleigh or Asheville. We chose Asheville, because we love the atomosphere~Crime is everywhere...and I would even say more so in Raleigh...but everywhere has its projects and slums, but there are the good places too. Montford is a nice area to live. Kimberly Avenue (Near the grove park) has a few houses for sale. The only thing about that st. is its only 25 mph, so cops usually catch some speeders..and the occasional wild turkey will cross the street. haha. Anyway, good luck with your decision!
